Book Presentation: “Education for Gender Equality”

Equality between men and women is a fundamental principle of our society. However, reality shows that there is still a long way to go. Based on this approach, Dr Francesca Salvà, lecturer in the Department of Applied Pedagogy and Educational Psychology at UIB, and Dr Elena Quintana, European Doctor in Inclusive Education at UIB, have developed a training proposal, backed by their experience as teachers and researchers, contained in the book “Education for Gender Equality”. A training proposal for social educators”.

The book presentation will take place on 10 March at 7 p.m. in classroom 18 of Sa Riera. It will include the participation of the authors and the director of the Balearic Institute of Women, Maria Duran, and the president of the College of Educators and Social Educators of the Balearic Islands, Violeta Rojas González.

The feminisation of poverty, sexual violence and the murder of women constitute the most visible part of structural inequalities that include, among their main reproduction mechanisms, the differential socialisation of boys and girls, adolescents and young people, by gender models that are obsolete and toxic.

The large volume of studies and proposals for introducing the perspective of gender equality at school contrasts with the scarcity of texts focused on the field of social education. The book by Doctors Salvà and Quintana fills this gap in the literature on the subject. Aimed at training students and professionals in social education, the publication develops the theoretical and conceptual aspects of education for gender equality and analyses equality policies and education for equality in Spain from the Constitution to the present day.
